General tips and advice
- Check BearCat for books, videos, and more at SUNY Potsdam; or do a keyword search for just videos.
- Do a wider search using SUNY Union Catalog (searches all SUNY libraries) or WorldCat
(searches thousands of libraries). Both of these have links to our
Interlibrary Loan service (Connect to ILLIAD now) - so that you can easily request the books
you find. You must be registered with Interlibrary Loan at Potsdam -
known as ILLiad - to use this service. (Register now!) NOTE: Not all materials listed in WorldCat are borrowable through interlibrary loan.
- Don't forget to use the bibliographies in reference works, books, and articles to identify other resources on your topic.
Finding books and reports
"BearCat": the online catalog
- Subject Searching: use "Subject Keyword" mode to search with terms such as:
- Endangered Species Act
- "Title plus contents keywords": this search mode searches all words in the title of books, and "Contents" when they are available
- "Keywords anywhere": use any name, place, or other term. Searches titles, contents notes, and subject headings
- Browsing: "Basic Search" using
"Subject begins with..." can help with finding good subject headings - Note: many older U.S. government documents (pre-1980) are listed in BearCat, but most recent documents are NOT.
Other library catalogs
- From the library website you can link to other library catalogs to do a wider search for books.
- Local libraries: for ex. St. Lawrence Univ.
- All SUNY libraries: use the SUNY Union Catalog
- All major U.S. and some foreign libraries: use WorldCat
EPA National Library Network
EPA Libraries are a good source for searching for documents of all kinds on environmental topics. Follow-up your search by requesting them through Interlibrary Loan.
