SUNY Potsdam Information Literacy Tutorials

Introduction:

As part of the General Education Program, students in classes with the Freshman Writing (FW), Freshman Speaking (FS), and Freshman Critical Thinking (FC) courses are introduced to the basic skills and concepts that define an information literate person.  A more sophisticated understanding and skill base for information literacy is covered within the courses for a major.  An overview of the learning objectives for each designator can be found at the general education page for these GEF (General Education Foundations) designators.

Tutorials:

FW and FS

Research in Databases (FW/current FS): {content is done - videos still being created and linked} Introduction to searching formal databases for articles, books, etc and citation styles

FC

Searching the Free Web (FC):  {still under construction.  Modules 1, 2, 3, and 4 done except for videos and some graphics; module 5 not yet done} - Searching and evaluation of the free web, and introduction to the deep web

proposed FS

News and Social Media (proposed FS): {still under major construction}  Introduction to news media searching and evaluation with a separate section on Wikipedia and social networking
